Donate a Car

Donating your unwanted car or truck can help your favorite charity or even a struggling family in need of basic transportation. Numerous charitable organizations accept vehicle donations, both at the local and national levels. Not only will your donation benefit others, you will be able to take a tax deduction when the charity sells the car at a vehicle auction.

Step1

Decide on the type of organization that you would like to receive your car. If you have a favorite cause or if a certain disease has affected your family, you may want to consider a charitable organization devoted to the cause or disease. Make sure the organization is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Step2

Look for a local organization that accepts car donations. Call your favorite charities and ask if they have a car donation program. When you donate locally, there is a greater chance that the proceeds from the car sale will benefit the organization's cause in your city or town.

Step3

Ask the organization you choose if it accepts vehicles directly or if it uses a for-profit intermediary group to handle donations. If a for-profit group is handling the donation for the charitable organization, the charity will not receive the full value of the car. If it is important to you that the charity receives as much money as possible from your donation, choose a group that is equipped to handle donations directly.

Step4

Find the intermediary group that charges the lowest handling fee possible if you can't find a local organization to take your car. There are a number of groups that handle donations for charities, including donateacar.com, vehiclesforcharity.org and donationonline.com.

Step5

Search for a group that will directly donate your car to a family in need if your car is in good condition. Check with local groups and ask if any of them have programs to support struggling families by providing transportation.
