How To Care For Peel And Stick Vinyl Tiles In Your Home

By Serena Price

Once thought to have gone out of fashion, classic peel and stick vinyl tiles are starting to make a renewed come back with building trades. There are various reasons this has happened, mostly being its basic insulation and simple maintenance. It is really surprising how strong and simple to clean this classic flooring material really is.

Typically vinyl flooring is attractive, long lasting and durable even when it is subjected to the high demands of a high traffic area. Luckily, keeping it cleaned up and looking good is simple and often requires just a little effort with a few common materials. With good maintenance these floors could realistically last for the lifetime of many homes.

Start out by preventing any dirt, stains or abrasions before they happen to your flooring. These are the things that will break down its finish over time on any flooring. Always use a good quality doormat in front of entryways to catch debris and throw rugs to protect high traffic areas.

If you have any furniture that requires moving, put some thing on the floor to protect it. Sheets of plywood, small rugs and plastic sheeting work well. You should also use some kind of coaster under your table legs or other furniture to help stop scratches during general use.

One of the better ways to clean your flooring is using simple tap water with a sponge mop. Always clean any spills up as quickly as you can so they can not stain by setting into the surface. If you are a vacuum user, wrap your wheels tightly with a thin layer of duct tape which softens them so they will not mark up the surface of your flooring.

For tough stains or good all around cleaning a cup of apple cider vinegar mixed with a gallon of warm water is a good mix for all purpose cleaning. If you want to disinfect as well, use a cup of white vinegar instead. If your floor has a build up of wax or dirt, add a few drops of liquid dish washing soap to help break the build up dirt and debris down for cleaning. To make it shine just add a few drops of baby oil to the mix.

There are also items everyone should never do. Using steel wool or abrasive pads that can cause light scratches and destroy the finish with even light use. Many mop and shine or abrasive cleaning products look nice at first, but can leave layers that are difficult to clean off. This is also true with solvent based polishes paste waxes. High strength ammonia with cleaning products that use it may over time actually break down the structure of the flooring creating noticeable cracks in it.

After mopping peel and stick vinyl tiles try to mop it again with just water. This will stop the build up of soap and other detergents or waxing agents. There could be times that you have other places to be. If you are in a rush you could always try dry mopping it. These floors are strong and will take it.
